Mohammed VI of Morocco has been the King of Morocco, since 23 July, 1999. He is the son of Hassan II of Morocco, who was King of Morocco, from 26 February, 1961 to 23 July, 1999, his death; and Lalla Latifa Amahzoune.
Mohammed is married to Princess Lalla Salma of Morocco (born Salma Bennani), with whom he has two children.
The creator of the Alaouite Dynasty in Morocco was Sharif ibn Ali.
Mohammed’s paternal grandfather was King Mohammed V of Morocco (Mohammed al-Khamis bin Yusef bin Hassan bin Mohammed bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hisham bin Mohammed bin Abdallah bin Ismail bin Sharif bin Ali al-Alawi, the son of Sultan Yusef of Morocco and Lalla Yaqut). Mohammed VI’s grandfather Mohammed V was born in Fez, and was Sultan of Morocco, from 17 November, 1927 to 20 August, 1953, and again, from 30 October, 1955 to 14 August, 1957, and King of Morocco, from 14 August 1957 to 26 February 1961. Mohammed VI’s great-grandfather Yusef was Sultan of Morocco, from 1912 to 1927. He was the son of Hassan I of Morocco, who was Sultan of Morocco, from 1873 to 1894, and of his fifth wife, Lalla Ruqiya, who was a Circassian from Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). Yaqut was of Turkish descent.
Mohammed’s paternal grandmother was named Lalla Abla bint Tahar (the daughter of Moulay Mohammed al-Tahar bin Hassan). Tahar was the son of Sultan Hassan I of Morocco.
