She is the daughter of actress Abby Dalton (born Marlene Wasden) and Jack Smith.

Kathleen’s maternal grandfather was Raymond Fredrick Wasden (the son of Harmon Edward Wasden and Flossie Ann Quarnberg). Harmon was the son of Frederick Wasden, who was English, and of Anna Maria Kristina Esklund, who was Swedish, from Gotland. Flossie was the daughter of Swedish emigrants, from Gotland, Peter Jacob Quarnberg and Caroline Marie Hanseen.

Kathleen’s maternal grandfather was Gladys Elizabeth Gaines (the daughter of W. F. Gaines and Pearlie Bell Gaines).
