Richard Russell Jr. was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was a Member of the Georgia House of Representatives, from 1921 to 1931, Governor of Georgia, from June 27, 1931 to January 10, 1933, a U.S. Senator from Georgia, from January 12, 1933 to January 21, 1971, and President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, from January 3, 1969 to January 21, 1971, his death.

He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1948 and 1952.

Richard was the son of Ina/Blandina (Dillard) and Richard Brevard Russell. His father was a prominent lawyer, and chief justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Richard’s paternal grandfather was William John Russell (the son of Edward William Russell and Susan Sarah Way). Richard’s grandfather William was born in Georgia. Edward was born on San Salvador Island, in the Bahamas, the son of John Russell, who was born in Staplehurst, Kent, England; and of Mary Hogg/Houge. Susan was the daughter of William Way and Ann Drusilla Hines.

Richard’s paternal grandmother was Rebecca Harriet/Harriett Brumby (the daughter of Richard Trapier Brumby and Mary Martha Isabelle/Isabella Brevard). Rebecca was born in North Carolina. Richard’s great-grandfather Richard was the son of Thomas Brumby, whose father was English; and of Susannah/Susanna Greening. Mary was the daughter of Col. Alexander McWhorter Brevard, whose paternal grandfather was from France, and whose maternal grandparents were from County Armagh, Ireland; and of Rebecca Davidson, whose paternal grandparents were from Armagh, Ireland, and Scotland, respectively.

Richard’s maternal grandfather was Fielding Dillard (the son of Fielding Dillard and Martha “Patsey”/”Patsy” Curtis Beadles). Richard’s grandfather Fielding was born in Georgia. Richard’s great-grandfather Fielding was the son of Thomas Dillard and Sarah “Sallie” Mason. Martha was the daughter of Joseph Beadles and Elizabeth Sarah.

Richard’s maternal grandmother was America Frances Chaffin (the daughter of Lemuel Chaffin and Elizabeth Tharpe/Thorp Maine/Mayne). America was born in Georgia. Lemuel was the son of Isham Chaffin and Patience Atkinson. Elizabeth was the daughter of James Mayne and Sarah Gibbs.

Richard was a third cousin, once removed, of politician Adlai Stevenson I, who was Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1893 to March 4, 1897; and a fourth cousin, once removed, of politician Adlai Stevenson II, who was Governor of Illinois and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., and who was the Vice President’s grandson. Richard’s maternal great-great-great-grandparents, Jean Brevard and Jane McWhorter, were also Vice President Stevenson’s paternal great-great-grandparents.
