What is exatly the difference between breton people and regular french people ?

    • Oaken05 says:

That they are relatively recent – within recorded history – Celtic people who emigrated from England to their current homeland, kept the culture alive, and identify as such?

      • jonasbttencourt says:

So, genetically, they are not very different from regular french people, because they are also heavily celtic, right? It’s just a simbolic terminology then…?

        • Oaken05 says:

What do you mean by symbolic? They are a separate ethnic group with their own history, culture and language. I’m not sure what’s difficult about this. Is it that so many have mixed with the French over time? Because many ethnic groups have mixed backgrounds.

          • jonasbttencourt says:

So the “normans” are a separate ethnic group too? It’s the same thing with cornish people, Cornwall literally part of England, they are southern english people, the same way bretons and normans are northern french people. I think it’s just to keep the ancient history alive, wich is cool, but no doubt in a regular basis they are all the same big celtic family with some germanic spice to it.

          • Oaken05 says:

Well, no, that’s not it, at all. Yes, the Norman were very much a separate ethnic group. Yes, the Bretons are very much ethnically distinct from the Langue d’oil-speaking peoples whose origins are nowhere near Brittany. That they had their language suppressed and such doesn’t change that.
