Ruthenian —> Rusyn
They are the same thing, so it’s better to stick to one word. I also don’t understand why some celebrities have “Rusyn/Ruthenian” in their ethnicity. That’s like writing “Scottish/Scotch”.
There’s a Malanka Sagan arriving in 1910 from Nastasiv, going to see her brother Iwan Sagan in Monessen, Pennsylvania . According to the record she’s Ruthenian. Her father is Luka Sagan.
John Sagan and Mary Jubinsky spoke Ukrainian.
I was thinking to Peter Sagan, who’s from Zilina, Slovakia.
Bablah, what do you think?
There are lots of ethnic Polish people named Sagan.
John Sagan was from Nastasiv, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine.
Was Sagan ethnically Ukrainian, though? Ternopil oblast had a lot of ethnic Polish people at the time.
Most John Sagans in the U.S. seem ethnically Polish.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find anything other than his WWI draft card and I’ve tried searching Ivan, Iwan and Jan. I might take another crack at Ellis island records later.
