She is the daughter of Gloria, a nurse, and David Doig, an engineer. Her father is of Scottish and Irish ancestry. Her mother is Filipino, originally from Dumaguete City, Philippines. She is married to actor, writer, and director Michael Shanks, with whom she has two children.
