Boutros Boutros-Ghali was an Egyptian politician and diplomat. He was the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations, from 1 January, 1992 to 31 December, 1996. He was also Egyptian (Acting) Minister of Foreign Affairs, from 17 November, 1977 to 15 December, 1977, and again, from 17 September, 1978 to 17 February, 1979; and Secretary-General of La Francophonie, from 16 November, 1997 to 31 December, 2002.

Boutros was the son of Sophie Charoubin and Youssef Boutros Ghali. His family were Coptic Christians. He was married to Leia Maria Nadler. Leia was raised in a Jewish family, and later converted to Catholicism.

Boutros’ paternal grandfather was named Boutros Ghali (the son of Ghali Nayruz). Boutros’ grandfather Boutros was born in Kiman-al-‘Arus, Beni Suef, Ottoman Empire, and was Prime Minister of Egypt, from 8 November, 1908 to 21 February, 1910. Boutros’ great-grandfather Ghali was the steward of Prince Mustafa Fadil.

Boutros’ paternal grandmother was named Safa Khalil.

Boutros’ maternal grandfather was named Mikhail Bey Sharubim. Mikhail was a prominent public servant and historian.

Boutros’ maternal grandmother was named Heneina Badir.
