Kim Il-sung was a Korean political figure. He has been Eternal President of North Korea, since September 5, 1998. He has also been Eternal Leader of Juche Korea, since 30 June, 2016, with his son Kim Jong-il.

From roughly 1948 to 1994, he actively led North Korea. Kim was the son of Kang Pan-sok and Kim Hyong-jik, a Korean independence activist. His family moved to Manchuria around 1920, and he later returned to the Korean Peninsula.

He was married to guerilla Kim Jong-suk, until her death, and to politician Kim Song-ae, until his death. He had three children with Jong-suk, and three children with Song-ae. He was the father of Kim Jong-Il, who ruled North Korea, from 1994 to 2011, and the grandfather of Kim Jong-un, who has ruled North Korea, from 2011.

His titles include the 1st Supreme Leader of North Korea, from 9 September, 1948 to 8 July, 1994, Premier of North Korea, from 9 September, 1948 to 28 December, 1972, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, from 30 June, 1949 to 8 July, 1994, titled as Chairman until 11 October, 1966, Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army, from 5 July, 1950 to 24 December, 1991, and President of North Korea, from 28 December, 1972 to 6 September, 1994.

His brother, Kim Yong-ju, was Vice Premier of North Korea, from 1974 to 1975, Vice President of North Korea, from December 1993 to October 1997, and Honorary Vice President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, from September 1998 to December 2021.

Kim’s paternal grandfather was Kim Bo-hyon (the son of Kim Ung-Woo/Ung-u and Lady Ri). Kim’s grandfather was born in Mangyongdae, Pyongyang, 평양. Kim’s great-grandfather was the son of Kim Song-ryong and Na Hyon-jik.

Kim’s paternal grandmother was named Bo Ik Li.

Kim’s maternal grandfather was named Kang Don-uk (the son of 강 강). 강 강 translates to river river, and is romanized as gang gang.

Kim’s maternal grandmother was named Wi Don-sin.
