He has a dark complexion for someone of northern European ancestry. I wonder where he gets it?

    • abelleza says:

His swiss side could account for his complexion. I’ve seen quite few swiss people with dark hair, olive skin and pale blue eyes.

    • SmartAss says:

Germans aren’t nothern European and they have against all stereotypes mostly a ‘dark’ complexion.

      • phaedra says:

Er no, most Germans have a light complexion. As with Poles, Belgians and other Central Europeans.

You don’t have to be Northern European in order to have pale skin.

      • Freerk says:

Northern Germans are… Germanic and thus northern Europeans, with the center originally in northern Germany/Denmark/southern Sweden. Southern Germans are a mixture of Germanics and Celts, and can be regarded as Central Europeans (but mixed). Both have light skin and blond, brown or sometimes read or even black hair, albeit to a different degree (the percentage of blondes is significantly higher in northern Germany). The Romans in ancient times couldn’t distinguish between Germanics and Celts.

But there is an underlying population stratum of relatively dark (-haired) people that you will find throughout Europe. The blondes are just a mutation about 10-20,000 years ago, centered around the Baltic Sea, and not as wide-spread as rumours say. If you want to distinguish different ethnicities in Europe, facial features are a better indicator than skin or hair colour. And it’s always a guess, because you’ll find all types in all ethnicities, just to a different degree. There are “typical” faces though (difficult to describe abstractly).

Hoechlin looks like a typical European of the basic type, most probably of Rhaeto-Romance origin, regarding his Swiss-“German” heritage. Apart from his really dark hair, his face looks more German than Mediterranean, and his eyes are of a light gray (or blue?), what is common with central Europeans, but not in the Mediterranean.
