Stephen Breyer is an American lawyer and jurist. He served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from August 3, 1994 to June 30, 2022. He was previously a Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, from December 10, 1980 to August 3, 1994, and a Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, from March 1990 to August 3, 1994.
Justice Breyer is the son of Anne Adele (Roberts) and Irving Gerald Breyer, a lawyer, who was legal counsel to the San Francisco Board of Education. His brother is attorney and jurist Charles Breyer, who has been a Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, from 1997 to 2011, and a Senior Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, since 2011.
Justice Breyer is married to British psychologist, The Honourable Joanna Freda Hare, with whom he has three children. Joanna is the daughter of British politician, John Hare, 1st Viscount Blakenham. One of their daughters is an Episcopal priest.
Justice Breyer’s paternal grandfather was Samuel Thompson Breyer (the son of Joseph L. Breyer and Fannie Kleinmann). Samuel was born in Ohio, to a Romanian Jewish father and a Hungarian Jewish mother.
