She was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to an Ethiopian father, a doctor, and an Irish mother, Nora (likely née Malone), a nurse. Her parents met while her mother was working in Ethiopia. Ruth moved to Limerick, Ireland when she was around four.
