Mickey Mantle was an American professional baseball player. Primarily a center fielder, he played his entire Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the New York Yankees, from 1951 to 1968. He was nicknamed “the Commerce Comet” and “the Mick.”

Mickey is the son of Lovell Velma (Richardson) and Elvin Charles/Clark “Mutt” Mantle. He was named after professional baseball player Mickey Cochrane. He was raised partly in Commerce, Oklahoma. He was married to author Merlyn Mantle (née Johnson), until his death, with whom he had four children.

Mickey’s paternal grandfather was Charles Edwin Mantle (the son of David James Mantle and Elisa/Eliza C. Moore). Charles was born in Missouri. David was born in Brierly Hills, Staffordshire, England, the son of George S. Mantle and Maria Scrivin/Scriven. Elisa was the daughter of Robert Moore, whose father was from Northern Ireland, and of Lydia Ann Powers, who was from Maine.

Mickey’s paternal grandmother was Mae Mary Clark (the daughter of Braxton/Brackston S. Clark and Sarah E. Elam). Mae was born in Arkansas. Braxton was the son of James T. Clark and Eliza J. Sams. Sarah was the daughter of Richard Hurt Elam and Lockey Taylor.

Mickey’s maternal grandfather was Charles Lewis Richardson (the son of Jesse/Jessie Monroe Richardson and Mariah Elizabeth Baldwin). Charles was born in Missouri. Jesse was the son of John William Richardson and Rhoda Luttrell. Mariah was the daughter of James Claiborne Baldwin and Sarah Ann Underwood.

Mickey’s maternal grandmother was Annie Laurie Thomas (the daughter of John Dennison/Dennis Thomas and Malinda Annis Leonard). Annie was born in Arkansas. John was the son of William Henry Thomas and Sarah Rebecca Foust. Malinda was the daughter of The Rev. John Leonard, who was a bugler, and of Mary Ann “Polly” Lewis.
