Matty Healy is a British singer, songwriter, record producer, and activist. He is the lead vocalist and principal songwriter of indie art pop band the 1975. An influential figure in indie music, he is known for his onstage persona and performance art. His music and lyrics deal eclectically with themes including internet culture, society and politics, masculinity, and relationships. He is an advocate against climate change and for LGBTQ+ rights. He is also known as Truman Black.
Matty is the son of actors Tim Healy (Timothy Malcolm Healy) and Denise Welch (Jacqueline Denise Welch). His brother, Louis, is an actor. His stepfather is painter Lincoln Townley. He was partly raised in Melbourne, Australia; on a cattle farm in Hedley on the Hill, Northumberland; and then, mostly, in Alderley Edge, a village in Cheshire.
Matty’s paternal grandfather was Timothy Malcolm Healy (the son of Walter Thomas Healy and Beatrice Mattilda/Matilda Cooper). Timothy was born in Woolwich, London.
