Leonor, Princess of Asturias is the heiress presumptive to the Spanish throne. She is the eldest daughter of Felipe VI, who has been King of Spain, since 19 June, 2014, and Queen Letizia of Spain. Her father is head of state and commander-in-chief of the Spanish Armed Forces, and has the military rank Captain General; he was born to a European Royal family. Her mother was previously a journalist and news anchor; she was born to a Spanish commoner family, with distant Occitan and Catalan roots. Her titles are Princess of Asturias, Princess of Girona, Princess of Viana, Duchess of Montblanc, Countess of Cervera, and Lady of Balaguer.

Princess Leonor’s grandfather Juan was born in Rome, Italy, and was King of Spain, from 22 November, 1975 to 19 June, 2014. Princess Leonor’s great-grandfather Infante Juan was born at the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, San Ildefonso, Kingdom of Spain, and was Head of the Royal House of Spain, from 15 January, 1941 to 14 May, 1977; he was a claimant to the throne. Infante Juan was the son of Alfonso XIII, who was King of Spain, from 17 May, 1886 to 14 April, 1931, and of Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, who was born in Balmoral Castle, Scotland, the granddaughter of English Queen Victoria. Princess Leonor’s grandmother Queen Sofia was born Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark at Tatoi Palace, Athens, Greece. A Glücksburg, she became a Bourbon by marraige. Princess Leonor’s great-grandfather Paul was King of the Hellenes, from 1 April, 1947 to 6 March, 1964. He was born at Tatoi Palace, Athens, Greece, the son of Constantine I of Greece, who was King of the Hellenes, from 18 March, 1913 to 11 June, 1917, and again, from 19 December, 1920 to 27 September, 1922; and of Sophia of Prussia, who had been born at New Palace, Potsdam, Kingdom of Prussia. Princess Leonor’s great-grandmother Frederica was born in Blankenburg (Harz), Duchy of Brunswick, German Empire, the daughter of Ernest Augustus, who was Duke of Brunswick, from 1 November, 1913 to 8 November, 1918, and Head of the House of Hanover, from 14 November, 1923 to 30 January, 1953; and of Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia, of the House of Hohenzollern. Princess Leonor’s maternal grandfather is Jesús José Ortiz Álvarez, a journalist (the son of José Luis Ortiz Velasco and María del Carmen “Menchu” Álvarez del Valle). Princess Leonor’s great-grandfather José was the son of José Ortiz Pool and Carmen Velasco Gutiérrez. María was a radio broadcaster in Asturias for over forty years. She was the daughter of Jesús or Eulalio Álvarez de la Fuente and Plácida del Valle Arribas.

Princess Leonor’s maternal grandmother is María Paloma Rocasolano Rodríguez, a nurse and union representative (the daughter of Francisco Julio Rocasolano Camacho and Enriqueta Rodríguez Figarredo/Figueredo). María was born in Madrid, Spain. Francisco was the son of Miguel Rocasolano y Cebrián and María Camacho Rodríguez. Enriqueta was the daughter of Enrique Rodríguez, who was born in the Philippines, to Spanish parents; and of María Paloma Figueredo, who was born in Oviedo, Asturias, Principado de Asturias.
