Harry S. Truman was an American politician and judge. A Democrat, he served as the 33rd President of the United States, from April 12, 1945 to January 20, 1953. He was elected to the position in 1948. He was previously the 34th Vice President of the United States, from January 20, 1945 to April 12, 1945. He was elected to the position in 1944. He took over as President upon Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death. He was also a U.S. Senator from Missouri, from January 3, 1935 to January 17, 1945.

He participated in the Democratic Party’s presidential primaries in 1952.

He was Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 1945 and 1948.

President Truman was the son of Martha Ellen (Young) and John Anderson Truman. All of his grandparents were born in Kentucky. His maternal grandfather was of German descent. His other ancestry was English, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, Scottish, and more distant French Huguenot. His middle initial was simply S., in honor of his grandfathers’ names (one grandfather’s middle name Shipp, the other’s first name Solomon).

President Truman was married to Elizabeth Virginia “Bess” (Wallace), with whom he had a daughter.

President Truman’s paternal grandfather was Anderson Shipp Truman (the son of William Truman and Emma Grant Shipp). Anderson was born in Shelby County, Kentucky. William was the son of William Truman and Nancy. Emma was the daughter of Richard Jonathan Shipp and Elizabeth Doniphan.

President Truman’s paternal grandmother was Mary Jane Holmes (the daughter of Jesse Holmes and Ann Drusilla/Druscilla “Nancy” Tyler). Mary Jane was born in Shelby County, Kentucky. Ann was the daughter of Robert Tyler and Margaret.

President Truman’s maternal grandfather was Solomon Young (the son of Jacob Young and Rachel Goodnight). Solomon was born in Kentucky. Jacob was born in North Carolina, the son of German parents, Johann/John George Jung/Young and Ann/Anna Moss/Ferry. Rachel was also born in North Carolina, the daughter of German parents, Hans Michael Gutknecht/Goodnight and Mary Barbara Fiscus/Landis/Landers.

President Truman’s maternal grandmother was Harriet/Harriett Louisa Gregg (the daughter of David Gregg and Sarah “Sally”/”Sallie” Scott). Harriet was born in Kentucky. Sarah was the daughter of William Scott.

    President’s Truman maternal great-great-grandparents, Hans Michael Gutknecht/Gudknecht and Mary Landis, were also Julia’s maternal 6th great-grandparents

    Also, President Truman and President Obama are fourth cousins, three times removed, through Hans Gutknecht and Anna Barbara Kieffer
