Garret Hobart was an American politician and businessperson. A Republican, he served as Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1897 to November 21, 1899, his death. He was elected to the position in 1896. He was also Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly, from January 13, 1874 to January 12, 1875, and President of the New Jersey Senate, from January 11, 1881 to January 9, 1883.

He was the son of Sophia P. and Addison W. Hobart. His nephew, brother’s son, was politician George S. Hobart, who was also Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly. Vice President Hobart was married to Jennie Tuttle Hobart, until his death, with whom he had four children. Jennie was the daughter of politician Socrates Tuttle, who was Mayor of Paterson, New Jersey, from 1871 to 1872.

Vice President Hobart’s paternal grandfather was Roswell Hobart (the son of Abel Hobart and Betsey Wallis). Roswell was born in New Hampshire. Abel was the son of William Hobart and Keziah Brown. Betsey was the daughter of William Wallis and Thankful.

Vice President Hobart’s paternal grandmother was named Eliza Bundy (the daughter of parents surnamed Bundy and Rosebrook). Eliza was born in New Hampshire.

Vice President Hobart’s maternal grandfather was David Garret Vanderveer (the son of Garrett Teunis Vanderveer and Jane Hendrickse Van Voorhees). David was born in New Jersey. Garrett was the son of Teunis Janse Vanderveer and Aeltje Gerretse Schenck. Jane was the daughter of Hendrick Gerritse Gerretson Van Voorhees and Sarah Janse Schenck.

Vice President Hobart’s maternal grandmother was Catherine DuBois (the daughter of The Rev. Benjamin du Bois and Fammetje Deynse). Catherine was born in New Jersey. The Rev. Benjamin was the son of Louis DuBois and Margrietje Jansen. Fammetje was the daughter of Teunis Dionijsen Denyse/de Nyse and Francyntje Hendrickson.
