Élisabeth Borne is a French politician and civil engineer. She served as Prime Minister of France, from 16 May, 2022 to 9 January, 2024. She has also been Prefect of Vienne, from 1 February, 2013 to 23 April, 2014, President of RATP, from 21 May, 2015 to 17 May, 2017, Minister of Ecological and Inclusive Transition, from 16 July, 2019 to 6 July, 2020, and Minister of Labour, Employment and Integration, from 6 July, 2020 to 16 May, 2022. She was France’s second female Prime Minister. During her tenure as Prime Minister, she oversaw pension system reform, including raising the age of retirement to 64; and led the government’s handling of France’s cost-of-living crisis and the passage of a multi-year military planning and increased spending law.
She is the daughter of Margueritte Marie (Lecèsne), a pharmacist, and Joseph Jos Borne/Bornstein/Borenstzejn, who ran a rubber products factory. Her father was born in Antwep, Flanders, Belgium, to Polish Jewish parents; his own father, grandmother, and two brothers were killed in the Holocaust. Élisabeth’s mother was French, and Catholic, born in Livarot, Calvados, Normandy; she was also of part Belgian Walloon descent. Élisabeth’s parents met in 1945. Her father had been part of the French Resistance during WWII. He was arrested by the Gestapo in Grenoble in 1943, and deported to Auschwitz, which he survived with another brother. The two moved to Élisabeth’s hometown in Normandy. Her father suffered from depression and trauma, and committed suicide when she was eleven.
Elisabeth has a son with her former husband, lecturer and engineer Olivier Allix.
Élisabeth’s paternal grandfather was Zelig Selig Bornstein/Borensztejn (the son of Pesach Arieh/Leib Bornstein and Tziporah/Feiga Segal). Zelig was born in Łuków, Łuków County, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland, and was killed in the Holocaust, in Auschwitz, in 1944. Tziporah was born in Łuków, Lublin, the daughter of Nechemia Segal and Rivka Segal. She was shot and killed by the Nazis in Poland in 1941.
Élisabeth’s paternal grandmother was Chana Anna Bursztyn (the daughter of Moszek Bursztyn and Dwojra Szer). Chana was born in Siedlce, Siedlce County, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland. Dwojra was born in Rawy, Maków.
Élisabeth’s maternal grandfather was Marcel Lecèsne (the son of Louis Désiré Lecèsne and Blanche Louise Amelie Goudon). Marcel was born in Livarot, Calvados, Normandy. Louis was the son of Louis François Lecèsne and Fortunée Eloise Zulma Chevalier. Blanche was the daughter of Louis Goudon and Ernestine Tabart.
Élisabeth’s maternal grandmother was Marie Louise Jacob (the daughter of Emile Jacob and Madeleine Marie Léontine Lefrancois). Élisabeth’s grandmother Marie Louise was born in Bernay, Eure, Normandy, France. Emile was the son of Alphonse Joseph Jacob and Leonie Joseph Duray, who were from Gibecq, Ath, Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium. Madeleine was the daughter of Théophile Lefrancois and Marie Léontine Lenormand.
