Edmund Barton was an Australian politician and judge. He served as the first Prime Minister of Australia, from 1 January, 1901 to 24 September, 1903. He was also Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, from 3 January, 1883 to 31 January, 1887, Leader of the Protectionist Party, from 1 January, 1901 to 24 September, 1903, Minister for External Affairs, from 1 January, 1901 to 24 September, 1903, and Justice of the High Court, from 5 October, 1903 to 7 January, 1920, among other duties.

Prime Minister Barton was the son of Mary Louisa (Whydah) and William Giles Barton, a stockbroker. His parents were English emigrants, from London, England. He was married to Jane Barton, until his death, with whom he had eight children. Jane was born in London.

Prime Minister Barton’s paternal grandfather was named Edward Barton (the son of Edward Barton and Elizabeth).

Prime Minister Barton’s paternal grandmother was named Sarah Gray.

Prime Minister Barton’s maternal grandfather was named Edward Whydah.

Prime Minister Barton’s maternal grandmother was named Sophia Synett (the daughter of Thomas Sinnett and Mary). Thomas was the son of Thomas Sinnett and Jane.
