Ashleigh Barty is an Australian professional tennis player and cricketer. She was ranked No. 1 in the world in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), and held the ranking for 121 weeks overall. She has been a top-10 in doubles, and is a three-time Grand Slam singles champion, and a major doubles champion.

She is the daughter of Josie and Robert Barty. Her father was raised in Bowen, a rural North Queensland town, where he became a Queensland and Australian representative in golf, and worked for the State Library of Queensland. He is of Ngarigo Aboriginal heritage. Ashleigh’s paternal great-grandmother was Ngaragu, the Aboriginal people of southern New South Wales and northeastern Victoria. Ashleigh’s mother was a state representative for Queensland in golf, and a radiographer. Ashleigh’s maternal grandparents were English.

Ashleigh is the National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador for Tennis Australia. She was raised in Springfield, a suburb of Ipswich, Queensland. She is married to professional golfer Garry Kissick.

    Aussie media have stretched too much her Indigenous ancestry.

    It’s odd because it’s supposed to come from her father’s side, but he looks white (unless it’s her stepfather). I guess she is no more than 1/16 Aboriginal or so.
