George Stevens was an American filmmaker. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for A Place in the Sun (1951) and Giant (1956).

George was the son of Georgia Cooper and Landers Stevens. His parents were both actors, as was his maternal grandmother.

George was married to Joan McTavish, until his death. He had a son, producer George Stevens Jr., with his former wife, actress Yvonne Howell.

George’s paternal grandfather was James William Stevens (the son of James Stevens and Harriet Price). George’s grandfather James was born in Maryland.

George’s paternal grandmother was Hannah Laura Thompson (the daughter of William Thompson). Hannah was born in Illinois, to a Scottish father.

George’s maternal grandfather was Frederick Alfred Cooper. Frederick was born in New York, to English parents.

George’s maternal grandmother was Georgia Woodthorpe (the daughter of John William Woodthorpe and Harriet Morris). George’s grandmother Georgia was born in California. John was born in France, to English parents. Harriet was a Welsh immigrant.
