George Galloway is a Scottish politician, broadcaster, and writer. He has been Leader of the Workers Party of Britain, since 8 December, 2019, and, previously, Leader of the Respect Party, from 10 June, 2013 to 18 August, 2016. He was a Member of Parliament for Glasgow Hillhead and Kelvin, from 11 June, 1987 to 11 April, 2005, for Bethnal Green, from 5 May, 2005 to 12 April, 2010, for Bradford West, from 29 March, 2012 to 30 March, 2015, and for Rochdale, from 29 February, 2024 to 30 May, 2024. In the 1980s, he chaired the Scottish Labour Party and was general secretary of charity War on Want; he founded the Mariam Appeal in the 1990s to campaign against sanctions on Iraq, and later the British unionist alliance All for Unity. He hosted radio’s The Mother of All Talk Shows, and has been a presenter on Russian and Iranian state television.
George is the son of Sheila (O’Reilly), a cleaner and factory worker, and George Galloway, an electrician, teacher, and trade unionist. He was raised in Lochee and Charleston, in Dundee.
George is married to Dutch-Indonesian anthropologist Putri Gayatri Pertiwi. He has a daughter with his former wife Elaine Fyffe; two children with his former wife Rima Husseini, who is Lebanese; and three children with Putri. George is Catholic; three of his wives have been Muslim.
George’s paternal grandfather was Andrew Galloway (the son of Andrew Galloway and Margaret Anderson “Maggie” Smith). George’s grandfather Andrew was born in Dundee. George’s great-grandfather Andrew was the son of Andrew Galloway and Margaret Wilkie Ogilvie. George’s great-grandmother Margaret was the daughter of John Smith and Jane “Jean” Tasker.
George’s paternal grandmother was Alexina Morrison (the daughter of Alexander Morrison and Annie Callaghan). Alexina was born in Dundee. Alexander was the son of Alexander Morrison and Sarah Hughes. Annie was Irish.
