Jim McGreevey is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Mayor of Woodbridge Township, NJ, from January 1, 1992 to January 15, 2002, and Governor of New Jersey, from January 15, 2002 to November 15, 2004. He was later head of Jersey City’s Employment & Training Program (JCETP), and Executive Director of the New Jersey Reentry Corporation.
Jim is the son of Veronica, a nurse, and Jack McGreevey, a Marine drill instructor. His father served in WWII and the Korean War. His paternal grandparents were Irish. His maternal grandparents were born in England. Jim was raised in Carteret, near Jersey City. He has a daughter with his former wife, Canadian, Karen Joan Schutz; and a daughter with his former wife, Portuguese-born Dina Matos.
Jim was raised Catholic. He obtained a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree from the Episcopalian, General Theological Seminary, though later returned to the Catholic church.
Jim’s paternal grandfather was Michael Edward McGreevey (the son of James McGreavey and Bridget O’Hanlon). Michael was born in Bainbridge, Down, Northern Ireland. Bridget was born in Louth, the daughter of John O’Hanlon and Bridget O’Neill.
Jim’s paternal grandmother was named Margaret Bridget Hart.
Jim’s maternal grandfather was Herbert Stanley Smith (the son of John Smith and Clara Warrington). Herbert was born in Milton, Kent. John was the son of John Smith and Eliza Campany. Clara was the daughter of John Alfred Warrington and Elizabeth Amy Hall.
Jim’s maternal grandmother was Mary Teresa Brown (the daughter of James McCallum Brown and Mary Carden). Jim’s grandmother Mary was born in Liverpool, Lancashire. James was the son of Scottish parents, James Brown and Helen Paterson, who were from Campsie, Stirlingshire. Jim’s great-grandmother Mary was born in Dublin, Ireland, the daughter of George Carden and Margaret Byrne, from Carlow.
