John McAfee was an American computer programmer, businessperson, and politician. He wrote the first commercial anti-virus software and founded McAfee Associates to sell it, later leaving the company.
He was a candidate for the Libertarian Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 2016 and 2020.
John was born on a U.S. army base in the U.K., in Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. His father, Don Harold McAfee, was an American World War II veteran, from Roanoke, Virginia. His mother, Joan Ellen (Williams), was English. He was raised in Salem, Virginia. John was married to Janice Dyson, until his death.
John’s paternal grandfather was Timothy Marvin “Tim” McAfee (the son of John David McAfee and Mary Elizabeth Thompson). Timothy was born in Virginia. John’s great-grandfather John McAfee was the son of James McAfee and Elizabeth Minton.
