Lapo Elkann is an Italian businessperson, philanthropist, and socialite.
Lapo is the son of Italian parents, Alain Elkann, a novelist, intellectual, and journalist, and Margherita Agnelli, a member of the powerful Agnelli family. He is the brother of industrialist John Elkann, the Chairman of the Fiat group of companies, and film director Ginevra Elkann. His father is Jewish and his mother is Catholic. He has said, “[I’m] proud of my Jewish roots.” He formally practices Judaism.
He speaks Italian, French, English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Lapo is married to Portuguese rally raid racer Joana Lemos.
Lapo’s paternal grandfather was Jean-Paul Elkann (the son of Armand Elkann and Berthe Bloch). Jean-Paul was a French banker, born in Paris, France, to an Alsatian Jewish family. Armand was the son of Isaac Elkann and Marie Anne Dreyfuss.
Lapo’s paternal grandmother was Carla Ovazza (the daughter of Vittorio Camillo Ovazza and Olga Cinci Fubini). Carla was an Italian Jew. Lapo’s maternal grandmother was Marella Agnelli, Princess Donna Marella Caracciolo di Castagneto (the daughter of Don Filippo Caracciolo, 8th Prince di Castagneto, 3rd Duke di Melito, and of Margaret Clarke). Lapo’s grandmother Princess Marella was born in Florence, Kingdom of Italy, and was a noblewoman, art collector, socialite, and style icon. Filippo was the son of Nicola Caracciolo, 2nd Duca di Melito, and of Meralda Mele Barese/Barrese. Lapo’s great-great-grandmother Meralda was the daughter of an Italian father and a British Isles mother, and was the granddaughter of English politician and poet Winthrop Mackworth Praed. Lapo’s great-grandmother Margaret Clarke was born in Peoria, Illinois, United States, the daughter of Charles Corning Clarke and Alice Chandler.
