Arthur Meighen was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He served as Prime Minister of Canada, from July 10, 1920 to December 29, 1921, and again, from June 29, 1926 to September 25, 1926. His party affiliation was Conservative (1908-1917), Unionist (1917-1922), Conservative, again (1922-1942), and then Progressive Conservative (1942-1960). He was also Solicitor General of Canada, from June 26, 1913 to October 3, 1917, Minister of the Interior/Superintendent-General of Indian Affairs, from October 12, 1917 to July 10, 1920, a Canadian Senator from Ontario, from February 3, 1932 to January 16, 1942, and Leader of the Government in the Senate/Minister Without Portfolio, from February 3, 1932 to October 22, 1935. He was a Member of Parliament for Portage la Prairie (MB), from October 26, 1908 to December 6, 1921; and for Grenville (ON), and then again Portage la Prairie, cumulatively, from January 26, 1922 to September 14, 1926.
Prime Minister Meighen was the son of Mary Jane (Bell) and Joseph Meighen. He was married to Isabel (Cox) Meighen, with whom he had three children.
Prime Minister Meighen’s paternal grandfather was Gordon Meighen (the son of Arthur Meighen and Jane Gordon). Gordon was a Presbyterian from Londonderry, Ireland.
Prime Minister Meighen’s paternal grandmother was Isabella Irwin (the daughter of Samuel Irwin and Mary Margaret McFarlane). Isabella was from Londonderry.
