Daniel is, I believe, descended from Dr Jean Baptiste Chastang and Louison, a black woman. Jean Baptiste was born in Louisiana, to French parents. Their son was Pierre Zenon Chastang, and he married Marie Therese Bernoudy, a free woman of colour (from what I gather she was of African, French and Native American descent). Pierre and Marie’s son, Pierre Zenon Chastang married Petronilla Andry (also of African and French descent). Their son Pierre Sostand Chastang was married to Mary Gomez, and their son was Victoria’s great-great-grandfather Daniel Chastang.
