Rutherford B. Hayes was an American politician. A Republican, he was the 19th President of the United States, from March 4, 1877 to March 4, 1881. He was elected to the position in 1876. He was previously a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio, from March 4, 1865 to July 20, 1867, and a Governor of Ohio, from January 13, 1868 to January 8, 1872, and again from January 10, 1876 to March 2, 1877.

President Hayes was the son of Sophia (Birchard) and Rutherford Hayes, Jr. He was married to Lucy Ware (Webb) Hayes, with whom he had eight children. His parents were from Vermont. President Hayes had deep roots in New England, specifically Connecticut and Massachusetts.

President Hayes’ paternal grandfather was Rutherford Hayes (the son of Ezekiel Hayes and Rebecca Russell). President Hayes’ grandfather Rutherford was born in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut. Rebecca was the daughter of John Russell and Sarah Trowbridge.

President Hayes’ paternal grandmother was Chloe Smith (the daughter of Israel Smith and Abigail Chandler). Chloe was born in Granby, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Israel was the son of John Smith III and Elizabeth Smith. Aibgail was the daughter of Isaac Chandler and Abigail Hale.

President Hayes’ maternal grandfather was named Roger Cornwall/Birchard (the son of a father surnamed Birchard, and of Sarah Jacob/Jacobs). Roger was born in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Jacob/Jacobs, Jr. and Mary/Mariah Storrs.

President Hayes’ maternal grandmother was Drusilla Austin (the daughter of Daniel Austin and Abigail Phelps). Drusilla was born in Connecticut, likely in Suffield, Hartford. Daniel was the son of Nathaniel Austin and Abigail Hovey. President Hayes’ great-grandmother Abigail Phelps was the daughter of Timothy Phelps and Abigail Merrick, whose own parents were John Merrick and Mary Day.
