Norma Shearer was a Canadian and American actress. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Divorcee (1930).

Norma was born in Montréal, Québec, Canada, the daughter of Edith Mary (Fisher) and Andrew Shearer. She had Scottish, English, and Irish, ancestry. In addition to Canadian, she became a U.S. citizen. Her brother, Douglas Shearer, was a pioneering sound designer and recording director, and her sister was actress and socialite Athole Shearer.

Norma was married to film producer Irving G. Thalberg (Irving Grant Thalberg), from 1927 until his death in 1936, and to ski instructor Martin Arrougé, until her death. Norma converted to Judaism, Irving’s faith, and remained a practicing Jew until at least his death in 1936. She had two children with Irving. Her sister Athole had two children with her former husband, film director and screenwriter Howard Hawks.

Norma’s paternal grandfather was James Traill Shearer (the son of Traill Shearer and Christian Simpson). James was born in Rosegill, Dunnet, Caithness, Scotland.

Norma’s paternal grandmother was Eliza Graham (the daughter of Francis Graham and Eleanor O’Rourke). Eliza was born in Montréal, Québec, Canada, to Irish parents.

Norma’s maternal grandfather was Edwin Chisholm Fisher (the son of Edwin Colley Fisher and Sarah Maria Thomson). Norma’s grandfather Edwin was born in Ontario, Canada. Norma’s great-grandfather Edwin was born in York, England, the son of Thomas Fisher. Sarah was born in Toronto, Canada, the daughter of Edward William Thomson and Sarah Maria Terry, and had Scottish and English ancestry.

Norma’s maternal grandmother was named Emily Cooper (the daughter of Henry Cholwell Cooper). Emily was born in Ontario, Canada. Henry was born in Dublin, Ireland.
