Norma Shearer was a Canadian and American actress. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Divorcee (1930).
Norma was born in Montréal, Québec, Canada, the daughter of Edith Mary (Fisher) and Andrew Shearer. She had Scottish, English, and Irish, ancestry. In addition to Canadian, she became a U.S. citizen. Her brother, Douglas Shearer, was a pioneering sound designer and recording director, and her sister was actress and socialite Athole Shearer.
Norma was married to film producer Irving G. Thalberg (Irving Grant Thalberg), from 1927 until his death in 1936, and to ski instructor Martin Arrougé, until her death. Norma converted to Judaism, Irving’s faith, and remained a practicing Jew until at least his death in 1936. She had two children with Irving. Her sister Athole had two children with her former husband, film director and screenwriter Howard Hawks.
Norma’s paternal grandfather was James Traill Shearer (the son of Traill Shearer and Christian Simpson). James was born in Rosegill, Dunnet, Caithness, Scotland.
