“I was born the week of the American hostage crisis in Tehran,” explains writer-director Tannaz Hazemi. “Both of my parents are Iranian, and my mom spent a lot of time trying to get us out of there,” she continues.

Hazemi grew up in post-revolution Iran, and then later Sweden, with her sister (the actress Mercedes Masohn) and parents. In 1993, the family immigrated to the Chicago suburbs where Hazemi attended high school and struggled with her English. “It was a massive cultural change,” she recalls.

    Apparently, Mercedes is 100% Iranian.
