G. B. Caird was a British Congregational minister, theologian, humanitarian, and biblical scholar. He was the theologian and principal of Mansfield College, Oxford, and Dean Ireland’s Professor of the Exegesis of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford.

He was the son of Esther Love and George Caird, who were from Dundee, Scotland. He was married to Viola Mary Newport, with whom he had four children, including Canadian-English stage director and writer John Caird, and George (Geordie), an oboist and principal emeritus of the Birmingham Conservatoire. His family lived in Edmondon, Alberta and Montréal, Québec, Canada, and then moved to Oxford, England, in 1959. His granddaughter is singer and songwriter Eliza Doolittle (born Eliza Sophie Caird).

G. B.’s paternal grandfather was George Caird (the son of John Caird and Jane/Jean Simpson). John was the son of Francis Caird and Helen Scott.

G. B.’s paternal grandmother was Margaret Wood Butchard (the daughter of James Butchard and Agnes Stewart).

G. B.’s maternal grandfather was John Samuel Bradford (the son of John Bradford and Elizabeth Smith Jennings). G. B.’s grandfather John was English. G. B.’s great-grandfather John was the son of Thomas Didlick Bradford and Ester Waters. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Jennings and Hester Love.

G. B.’s maternal grandmother was Mary Cumming (the daughter of George Cumming and Janet Martin). George was the son of James Cumming and Janet Scott. G. B.’s great-grandmother Janet was the daughter of William Martin and Margaret Robertson.
