David Souter is an American jurist and lawyer. He was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from October 9, 1990 to June 29, 2009. He was previously Attorney General of New Hampshire, from July 17, 1976 to September 19, 1978, Associate Justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court, from 1978 to 1983, Associate Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, from 1983 to 1990, and Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, from May 25, 1990 to October 9, 1990.
David is the son of Helen Adams (Hackett) and Joseph Alexander Souter. He spent his teen years on the family farm in Weare, New Hampshire.
David’s paternal grandfather was named Joseph Mitchel Souter (the son of James Souter and Margaret). Joseph was born in Massachusetts, to Scottish parents.
David’s paternal grandmother was Elizabeth/Lizzie McLauchlan/MacLachlan (the daughter of John McLauchlan and Isabel J. Flemming). Elizabeth was either Scottish, or born in Yorkshire, England, to Scottish parents. John was the son of James MacLaughlan.
