Dan Goldman is an American attorney and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, since January 3, 2023. He was the lead majority counsel in the 2019 impeachment of President Donald Trump, and lead counsel to the House Managers in the subsequent impeachment trial.

Dan is the son of Susan and Richard Goldman, a federal prosecutor. His father was from an upper-class family, of mostly German Jewish, along with Alsatian Jewish/French Jewish, English Jewish, and Czech Jewish, descent, with roots in the U.S. going back to the mid 1800s. Dan’s mother’s family were more recent Jewish emigrants from Russia and Ukraine.

Dan’s paternal grandparents Richard and Rhoda Goldman co-founded the Goldman Environmental Prize. His paternal great-great-great-grandfather was David Stern, who co-founded Levi Strauss & Co., the first company to manufacture blue jeans, with his brother-in-law, Levi Strauss (born Löb Strauß), the brother of Dan’s great-great-great-grandmother Fanny Strauss. Dan has been described as an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune. Dan’s great-great-grandfather Abraham Haas co-founded one of the first grocers in early Los Angeles, named Hellman, Haas & Co., later Smart & Final, and Dan’s great-great-great-grandfather, Abraham’s father-in-law, Simon Koshland, was one of the most successful San Francisco wool merchants.

He is the nephew of businesspersons and philanthropists John D. Goldman and Douglas E. Goldman, and activist and philanthropist Susie Gelman. Dan’s great-grandfather Walter A. Haas, Sr. was president and chairman of Levi Strauss & Co. His great-uncles, his grandmother’s brothers, were Walter A. Haas, Jr., who served as the company’s president and CEO, from 1958 to 1976, and chairman, from 1970 to 1981; and Peter E. Haas, who served as the company’s president and CEO, from 1976 to 2005, and chairman, from 1981 to 1989. Walter and his wife Evelyn founded the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund for cultural, civic, and social services. Dan’s first cousins, once removed, are Bob Haas, who is Levi Strauss & Co.’s chairman emeritus, and Walter J. Haas, who was president of the Oakland Athletics. Dan’s second cousin, three times removed, was Robert Haas, who co-create the Book-of-the-Month Club in 1926; his third cousin, twice removed, was aviator Betty Haas Pfister, who was Robert’s daughter; and his fourth cousin, once removed, was socialite and murder victim Nancy Pfister, who was Betty’s daughter.

Dan is married to Corinne Levy. He has two children with his former wife, Canadian Olympic diver and lawyer Anne Montminy; and three children with Corinne.

Dan’s paternal grandfather was Richard N. Goldman (Richard Nathaniel Goldman, the son of Richard Samuel Goldman and Alice Gertrude Wertheim). Dan’s grandfather Richard was born in San Francisco, California, and was a billionaire philanthropist. Dan’s great-grandfather Richard was born in California, and was an attorney. He was the son of Bernard/Baruch Goldman/Goldmann, who was born in Münchweiler an der Alsenz, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany; and of Henriette/Hattie Levy, whose parents were from Lixheim, Moselle, Grand Est. Dan’s great-grandmother Alice was born in Montana, the daughter of Nathan/Nate H. Wertheim, who was born in Ohio, to parents from Germany, his father from Wehrda, Hessen, and his mother from Kassel; and of Mary Kaufman, who was born in California.

Dan’s paternal grandmother was Rhoda Haas Goldman (born Rhoda Frances Haas, the daughter of Walter Abraham Haas and Elise Fanny Stern). Rhoda was born in San Francisco, California, and was a billionaire philanthropist. Walter was the son of Abraham Haas, who was born in Reckendorf, Upper Franconia, Bavaria, Germany; and of Frances Koshland, who was born in San Francisco, to a father from Ichenhausen, Swabia, Bavaria, Germany, and a mother from Hochspeyer, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Dan’s great-grandmother Elise was the daughter of Sigmund Stern, whose parents were from Bavaria; and of Rosalie Meyer, whose father was from Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, and whose maternal grandparents were from Ritterberg-Neumark, Chemnitz, Germany and London, England, respectively.

Dan’s maternal grandfather was Sidney Stanley Sachs (the son of William Michael Sachs and Rebecca Krupsaw). Sidney was born in Washington, D.C. William was born in Maryland, the son of parents from Russia, Louis Sachs and Sarah Miller. Rebecca was born in Washington, D.C., also to parents from Russia, David Krupsaw and Sarah Perry.

Dan’s maternal grandmother was Betty Kossow (the daughter of Jacob Kossow/Kosogliad and Rachel Shapiro). Betty was born in Ukraine, to parents who were born in al’Ne, Tal’nivs’kyi district, Cherkas’ka oblast. Jacob was the son of Ellis Kosogliad.
