Charlie Kaufman is an American screenwriter, producer, director, and novelist. He wrote the films Being John Malkovich, Human Nature (2001), Adaptation. (with his fictional brother, Donald Kaufman), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and then directed and wrote the films Synecdoche, New York; Anomalisa (which he co-directed); and I’m Thinking of Ending Things. He wrote the book Antkind.
Charlie is the son of Helen and Myron Kaufman. His maternal grandparents were emigrants from Poland. He was raised in Massapequa, New York, and West Hartford, Connecticut. He is married to Denise Monaghan, with whom he has one child.
Charlie’s maternal grandfather’s surname was Friedman.
