Carlos Alvarado Quesada is a Costa Rican writer, journalist, political scientist, and politician. He served as President of Costa Rica, from 8 May, 2018 to 8 May, 2022. He was previously Minister of Labor and Social Security, from 28 March, 2016 to 19 January, 2017.

President Alvarado is the son of Adelia Quesada Alvarado and Alejandro Alvarado Induni. He is married to architect Claudia Dobles Camargo, with whom he has a son.

President Alvarado’s paternal grandfather was Manuel Francisco de Jesús Alvarado Salazar (the son of Juan Bautista Alvarado Mora and María Josefa Celia de Jesús Salazar González). Manuel was born in San José, Costa Rica. Juan was the son of Valerio Alvarado and Gertrudis Saturnina Mora. Josefa was the daughter of José Víctor Salazar Chaves and María Toribia González Valverde.

President Alvarado’s paternal grandmother was María Berta del Carmen Induni Arquín (the daughter of Agostino Carlo Induni, or Agustín Carlos Induni Ferrari in Spanish, and of María Rosa de la Trinidad Arquín Céspedes). President Alvarado’s grandmother María was born in San José, Costa Rica. Agostino was a Swiss-Italian emigrant, from Magliaso, Ticino, and was the son of Filippo Induni and Maddalena Ferrari. Rosa was the daughter of Juan de Jesús Arquín Quesada and Adela Céspedes Sánchez.

President Alvarado’s maternal grandfather was Manuel de Jesús Quesada Castro (the son of Serviliano Joaquín Jorge de Jesús Quesada y Marín and Juana Benita Castro Mora). Manuel was born in San José, Costa Rica. Serviliano was the son of George (later Jorge) de Jesús Quesada Solano and Ramona Marín Muñoz. Juana was the daughter of Manuel de los Dolores Castro Umaña and Mónica de los Santos Mora Venegas.

President Alvarado’s maternal grandmother was Noemi Dominga del Rosario Alvarado Romero (the daughter of Noé Rafael María de Jesús Alvarado Morales and Adelia Urbana de los Ángeles Romero Mora). Noemi was born in San José, Costa Rica. Noé was the son of Juan Alvarado Jiménez and Sinforosa de la Concepción Morales. Adelia was the daughter of Juan de Jesús Romero Badilla and María Joaquina Ángela del Rosario Mora y Venegas, who was the younger sister of Mónica de los Santos Mora Venegas.

President Alvarado’s matrilineal ancestry can be traced to his fifth great-grandmother, Magdalena Rodríguez (c. 1780 – 1 June 1840, San José).
