Her father is of Russian descent and her mother is of Hungarian and Komi ancestry. The Komi are a Permian (Finnic) people, from the north-east of European Russia, around the basins of the Vychegda, Pechora, and Kama rivers. She is married, and has three children.

Katja has been sometimes rumoured to be of half Somali descent. This is not correct.
