Gabriel García Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short story writer, screenwriter, and journalist. He was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. He was also known as Gabo and Gabito.
Gabriel was the son of Luisa Santiaga Márquez Iguarán and Gabriel Eligio García, a pharmacist. He was married to Mercedes Raquel Barcha Pardo, with whom he had two children.
Gabriel’s paternal grandfather was Gabriel Martínez (the son of Leandro Garrido Piñeres and Sotera Martínez). Gabriel’s grandfather Gabriel was born in Sincé, Sucre.
Gabriel’s paternal grandmother was Argemira García Paternina (the daughter of Aminadab García Gordon and María de los Ángeles Paternina Bustamante). Argemira was born in Caimito, Sucre. Aminadab was the son of Félix del Socorro García Acuña and Vicenta Gordon. María de los Ángeles was the daughter of Evangelista Paternina and María Celedonia Bustamante.
Gabriel’s maternal grandfather was Nicolás Ricardo Márquez Mejía (the son of Nicolás del Carmen Márquez Hernández and Luisa Josefa Mejía Vidal). Gabriel’s great-grandfather Nicolás was born in Spain, the son of Nicolás del Carmen Hernández and Juana Hernández. Luisa was the daughter of Juan de la Cruz Mejía and Felisa Josefa Vidal.
Gabriel’s maternal grandmother was Tranquilina Iguarán (the daughter of Agustín Cotes and Rosa Antonia Iguarán Hernández). Rosa was the daughter of Blas Iguarán and Juana Hernández.
