Brian Stelter is an American journalist and media correspondent. He was the host of the show Reliable Sources on CNN from 2013 to 2022, and was the network’s chief media correspondent. He was previously a media reporter for The New York Times and the editor of TVNewser.

Brian is the son of Donna and Mark Stelter. He was raised Methodist. Brian is married to television traffic anchor Jamie, with whom he has two children.

Brian’s paternal grandfather was Laverne/Vern Richard Stelter (the son of Gustave/Gustav/Gustaf R. Stelter and Esther/Ester Amelia Anderson). Laverne was born in Wisconsin. Gustave was German, and was the son of William Christoph Stelter and Gusta Lehmen. Esther was the daughter of Andrew Nicholas Anderson, who was of Norwegian descent, and of Ida Amelia Jackson, who was Norwegian.

Brian’s paternal grandmother is named Ruth Johnson (the daughter of Arleigh C. Johnson and Hazel J.). Ruth was born in Wisconsin. Arleigh was the son of Henry S. Johnson and Sindy J. Hendrickson, who were of Norwegian descent, with the latter having roots in Oppland fylke.

Brian’s maternal grandfather was James W. Custer (the son of Roland Wilmur Custer and Helen Janet MacEwen). James was born in Maryland. Roland was the son of George Daniel Kuster and Barbra Ellen Nicholson. Helen was the daughter of Walter Dyer “Buck” MacEwen, whose father was born in Huron, Ontario, Canada; and of Grace Mildred Eppley.

Brian’s maternal grandmother was Louise Thelma Robey (the daughter of Charles Lester Robey and Harriet Frances King). Louise was born in Maryland. Charles was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Charles William Robey and Minnie W. Heitzer.

Brian is a first cousin, five times removed, of General George Armstrong Custer, of the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Brian’s maternal great-great-great-great-great-grandparents, John Fedele Custer and Catherine Valentine, were also General Custer’s paternal grandparents.
