His father, Gérard Lemarquis, is a French schoolteacher. His mother, Kristín Unnsteinsdóttir, is Icelandic, from Reykjavik. He speaks Icelandic, French, Danish, German, and English.

Tómas’ maternal grandfather was Unnsteinn Stefánsson (the son of Stefán Þorsteinsson and Ólöf Herborg Björnsdóttir). Unnsteinn was born in Sómastaðagerði, Reyðarfjörður. Stefán was the son of Þorsteinn Lúðvíksson and Stefanía Jónsdóttir. Herborg was the daughter of Björn Stefánsson and Margrét Stefánsdóttir.
