Thomas Mann was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, and essayist. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953.

Thomas was the son of Julia da Silva Bruhns and Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann, a senator and a grain merchant. His father was born in Lübeck, Germany. His mother was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to a German father and a Brazilian mother. His father was Lutheran and his mother was Catholic, and Thomas was raised Lutheran.

Thomas’ paternal grandfather was Johann Siegmund Mann (the son of Johann Siegmund Mann and Anna Katharina Grotjan). Thomas’ great-grandfather Johann was born in Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the son of Johann Siegmund Mann and Maria Dorothea Stüdemann.

Thomas’ paternal grandmother was Elisabeth Marty (the daughter of Johann Heinrich Marty and Catharina Elisabeth Croll). Johann was born in Glarus, Switzerland, the son of Petter Marty. Catharine was born in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Thomas’ maternal grandfather was Johann Ludwig Herman Bruhns (the son of Peter Gottlieb Bruhns and Maria Louise Sievers). Johann was born in Lübeck, Germany. Peter was the son of Jacob Ludwig Bruhns and Carlotta Elisabeth Plagemann.

Thomas’ maternal grandmother was Maria Luísa da Silva (the daughter of Manoel Caetano da Silva and Maria de Lara). Manoel was Portuguese, and was the son of Michuel da Silva and Teresa de Jesus. Thomas’ grandmother Maria Luísa was said to have Indigenous ancestry. It is not clear if this Indigenous ancestry has been verified/documented.
