Bill Cassidy is an American politician and gastroenterologist/physician. A Republican, he has been a U.S. Senator from Louisiana, since January 3, 2015. He was previously a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Louisiana, from January 3, 2009 to January 3, 2015. He helped create the No Surprises Act of 2020, for comprehensive balance billing protections for patients during medical emergencies.

He is the son of Elizabeth “Betty” and James F. Cassidy. He is married to physician Laura Layden, with whom he has three children. Bill belongs to a non-denominational Christian church.

Bill’s paternal grandfather was James Francis Cassidy (the son of James Cassidy and Mary C. McGowan). Bill’s grandfather James was born in Cincinatti, Ohio. Bill’s great-grandfather James was Irish, the son of Patrick Cassidy and Mary. Bill’s great-grandmother Mary was born in New York, to Irish parents, John McGowan and Bridget McNamee.

Bill’s paternal grandmother was Myfanwy “Fanny” Morgan (the daughter of John Morgan and Ellen Roberts). Myfanwy was born in Llanelltyd, Merioneth, Wales. John was born in Llanelltyd, the son of Evan Morgan and Margaret. Ellen was born in Llanfachreth, the daughter of Robert Roberts and Elizabeth.
