Piper Laurie was an American actress. A three-time Academy Award nominee, her roles included the films Son of Ali Baba, The Mississippi Gambler, The Golden Blade, Johnny Dark, Ain’t Misbehavin’ (1955), The Hustler (1961), Carrie (1976), as Carrie’s mother; Ruby (1977), Return to Oz, Children of a Lesser God (1986), Tiger Warsaw, Dream a Little Dream (1989), Other People’s Money, Storyville, Rich in Love, Wrestling Ernest Hemingway, The Crossing Guard, The Grass Harp, The Faculty, Hesher, and White Boy Rick; and television’s Days of Wine and Roses (1958), The Thorn Birds, St. Elsewhere, Promise (1986), and Twin Peaks.
She was the daughter of Charlotte Sadie (Alperin) and Alfred/Alter Jacobs/Jakubowitz/Jacobovitch, a furniture dealer. Her father was a Polish Jewish emigrant, from Czestochowa. Her mother was born in Pennsylvania, to Russian Jewish parents. Piper had a daughter with her former husband, entertainment writer Joe Morgenstern.
Piper’s paternal grandfather was Abraham Jakubowitz/Jacobovich/Jacobovitch (the son of Dawid Mortka Jakubowicz and Rajzla Bajla Promnicka). Abraham was born in Niedośpielin, Powiat radomszczański, Łódzkie. David was the son of Herszlik Jakubowicz and Paulina Pawa Moszkowicz/Majerowicz. Rajzla was the daughter of Abram Promnicki and Sora Ickowicz.
