Tom Tugendhat is a British politician and journalist. A member of the Conservative Party, he has been Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, from 12 July, 2017 to 7 September, 2022, and Minister of State for Security, from 6 September, 2022 to 5 July, 2024, as well as, a Member of Parliament for Tonbridge and Malling/Tonbridge, since 7 May, 2015. He was an officer in the British Army reserves, in the Territorial Army; serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was later a military assistant to the Chief of the Defence staff.
Tom is the son of Blandine (de Loisne) and The Hon. Mr Justice Tugendhat (Michael George Tugendhat), or Tugendhat J in legal writing, a High Court judge in England and Wales. His uncle is Conservative Party politician, businessperson, and author Lord Tugendhat (Christopher Samuel Tugendhat), who has been First Vice-President of the European Commission, from 6 January 1981 to 5 January 1985, Chancellor of the University of Bath, from 1998 to 2013, and a Member of the House of Lords, since 15 October, 1993. Tom’s mother is French.
Tom is married to lawyer and French civil servant Anissia Morel, with whom he has two children. He has dual U.K. and French citizenship. Tom is Catholic.
Tom’s paternal grandfather was Dr. Georg Tugendhat (the son of Samuel/Samy Tugendhat and Gabriele Jella Schick). Georg was born in Vienna, and was an Austrian Jewish immigrant to England. He later converted to Catholicism. He founded a petrochemical refinery in Manchester. Samuel was born in Bielsko-Biala, Bielsko County, Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, the son of Joseph Tugendhat and Bertha Schäffer. Gabriele was born in Brno, Brno-City District, South Moravian Region, Czechia, the daughter of Albert Schick and Auguste Winter.
Tom’s paternal grandmother was Marie Littledale (the daughter of Major Arthur Charles Littledale and Mary Josephine Harris). Arthur was born in Folkestone, Kent, England, the son of Henry Arthur Littledale and Elizabeth Eleanor Drinkwater. Tom’s great-grandmother Mary was born in Limerick, Ireland.
Tom’s maternal grandfather was Pierre-Charles Marie Menche de Loisne (the son of Henri Julien Augustin Charles Menche de Loisne and Thérèse Anne Marie Espivent de la Villesboisnet de la Prévalaye). Pierre-Charles was born in Rennes, Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France. Henri was the son of Auguste Charles Henri Menche de Loisne and Armandine Julie Marie Pauline Foucher de Brandois. Thérèse was the daughter of Pierre-Charles Espivent de la Villesboisnet de la Prévalaye and Catherine de Léon des Ormeaux.
Tom’s maternal grandmother was Françoise Marie Josèphe de Romanet de Beaune (the daughter of Prosper-Marie Pierre de Romanet de Beaune and Marie Josèphe Anne Armandine d’Oresmieulx de Fouquières). Françoise was born in Courgeout, Orne, Basse Normandie, France. Prosper-Marie was the son of Olivier de Romanet de Beaune and Jeanne de Berthier Bizy. Marie Josèphe was the daughter of René d’Oresmieulx de Fouquières and Mathilde de Romanet de Beaune.
