Charles W. Fairbanks was an American politician. A Republican, he served as Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1905 to March 4, 1909. He was elected to the position in 1904. He had previously been a U.S. Senator from Indiana, from March 4, 1897 to March 3, 1905.
He was also a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1904, 1908, and 1916.
Vice President Fairbanks was the son of Mary Adelaide (Smith) and Loriston Monroe Fairbanks. His father was born in Barnard, Windsor, Vermont. His mother was born in Austerlitz, Columbia, New York. He was of Colonial American descent. Vice President Fairbanks was married to Cornelia Cole Fairbanks, until her death, with whom he had five children.
Vice President Fairbanks’ paternal grandfather was Luther Fairbanks (the son of Luther Fairbanks and Thankful Wheelock). Vice President Fairbanks’ grandfather Luther was born in Swanzey, Cheshire, New Hampshire. Vice President Fairbanks’ great-grandfather Luther was born in Lancaster, Worcester, Massachusetts, and fought in the Revolutionary War. He was the son of Joshua Fairbanks and Eunice Wilder. Thankful was the daughter of Jonathan Wheelock and Thankful Haskell.

Vice President Fairbanks’ maternal grandfather was William DeForest Smith (the son of Lyman Smith and Elizabeth DeForest). William was born in Litchfield, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. Lyman was the son of Bethel Smith and Deliverance Smiith. Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph De Forest/DeForest and Gloriana Lamson.
Vice President Fairbanks’ maternal grandmother was Almira Gott (the daughter of Story Gott and Polly/Mary Wilcox). Almira was born in Austerlitz, Columbia, New York. Story was born in Colchester, New London, Connecticut, the son of John Gott and Anne Trotter. He fought in the Revolutionary War. Polly was the daughter of Hiel Wilcox and Deborah Gillet/Gillette.
