James S. Sherman was an American politician. A Republican, he served as Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1909 to October 30, 1912, his death. He was elected to the position in 1908. He was also Mayor of Utica, New York, from March 1884 to March 1885, and a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York, from March 4, 1887 to March 3, 1891, and again, from March 4, 1893 to March 3, 1909. He was known as “Sunny Jim” for his manner in the U.S. House. He is described as the first Vice President to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game.

He was the Republican Party’s nominee for re-election as Vice President of the United States in 1912, though he died a week before the election.

Vice President Sherman was the son of Mary Frances (Sherman) and Richard U. Sherman (Richard Updike Sherman), who was a politician, newspaper editor, and publisher. His father was born in Vernon, Oneida, New York. His brother, Richard W. Sherman, was also mayor of Utica.

Vice President Sherman was married to Carrie Babcock Sherman, until his death, with whom he had three children.

Vice President Sherman’s paternal grandfather was Willett Helme Sherman (the son of Robert Sherman and Honor Brown). Willett was born in Exeter, Washington, or South Kingston, both in Rhode Island. Robert was the son of Jonathan Sherman, Jr. and Mary Card. Honor was the daughter of Ebenezer Brown and Mary Congdon.

Vice President Sherman’s paternal grandmother was Catherine Ann Schoolcraft (the daughter of Lawrence Schoolcraft and Margaret Ann Barber Rowe). Lawrence was born in Albany County, New York.

Vice President Sherman’s maternal grandfather was Richard Winslow Sherman (the son of Jahaziel Sherman and Nancy Winslow). Richard was born in Albany, Albany Co., New York, and was captain of the boat the Phoenix, when it caught fire and sank in Lake Champlain, in 1819. Jahaziel was born in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts, the son of Prince Sherman and Sarah Sherman. Nancy was born in Freetown, Bristol, Massachusetts, the daughter of Richard Winslow and Charity Blossom.

Vice President Sherman’s maternal grandmother was Frances Lucretia Williams (the daughter of Stalham Williams and Mary Augusta Barron). Frances was born in Conway, Franklin, Massachusetts. Stalham was the son of William Williams and Dorothy Ashley. Mary was the daughter of William Barron and Mary Whiting.

Vice President Sherman’s parents were fifth cousins, once removed, through his father’s four times great-grandparents, and his mother’s five times great-grandparents, Philip Sherman and Sarah Odding.
