Lowell P. Weicker, Jr., also known simply as Lowell Weicker, was an American politician. As a member of the Republican Party, he was First Selectman of Greenwich, from 1964 to 1968, a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Connecticut, from January 3, 1969 to January 3, 1971, and a U.S. Senator from Connecticut, from January 3, 1971 to January 3, 1989. As a member of the A Connecticut Party, he was Governor of Connecticut, from January 9, 1991 to January 4, 1995.
He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1980.
Lowell was born in Paris, France, to American parents, Mary Hastings (Bickford) and Lowell Palmer Weicker. He was married to Claudia Testa Ingram, until his death. He had five children, including three with his former wife Marie Louise Godfrey.
Lowell’s paternal grandfather was Johann Adam Theodor/Theodore Wilhelm Weicker (the son of Ludwig Martin Weicker and Elisabethe Momberger). Johann was born in Darmstadt, Germany, and co-founded pharmaceutics company E. R. Squibb and Sons.
Lowell’s paternal grandmother was Florence Edith Palmer (the daughter of Lowell Mason Palmer and Grace Humphries/Humphreys Foote). Florence was born in New York.
