He is an ethnic Turkish from the Erciş District of Van Province. Although the majority of the villages in this district are of ethnically Kurdish origin, most of the natives of city center and a few surrounding villages (Çelebibağı, Kasımbağı, Yekmal, Zortul, Hergin, Çakırbey, Purmak etc.) are ethnically Turkish origin. Their dialect of Turkish is like a bridge between Erzurum dialect and the Iranian Azerbaijani one.
