James Monroe was an American politician. A member of the Democratic-Republican Party, he served as the 5th President of the United States, from March 4, 1817 to March 4, 1825. He was elected to the position in 1816 and 1820. He was also a U.S. Senator from Virginia, from November 9, 1790 to March 29, 1794, U.S. Minister to France, from May 28, 1794 to September 9, 1796, Governor of Virginia, from December 28, 1799 to December 1, 1802, and again, from January 16, 1811 to April 2, 1811; U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom, from April 18, 1803 to February 26, 1808, U.S. Secretary of State, from April 2, 1811 to March 4, 1817, and U.S. Secretary of War, from September 27, 1814 to March 2, 1815.

He was the Democratic-Republican Party’s nominee for President of the United States in Virginia in 1808; and was a candidate for the national Democratic-Republican Party’s presidential nomination that year.

President Monroe was the son of Elizabeth “Eliza” (Jones) and Spence Monroe. He was married to Elizabeth Jane (Kortright) Monroe, with whom he had three children.

President Monroe’s paternal grandfather was Andrew Monroe/Munroe (the son of William Monroe and Margaret Bowcock). Andrew was born in Virginia. William was the son of Andrew Monroe, who was born in Katewell, Ross, Scotland, and of Elizabeth, possibly Alexander, who was English. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Bowcock, who was English, from Lancashire, Westmoreland County, and of Jane.

President Monroe’s paternal grandmother was named Christian/Christiana Tyler (the daughter of Charles Tyler and Jane). Christian was born in Virginia.

President Monroe’s maternal grandfather was named James Jones.

President Monroe’s maternal grandmother was named Hester Davis (the daughter of Joshua Davis and Katherine/Catherine).
