Yair Lapid is an Israeli journalist and politician. He served as Prime Minister of Israel, from 1 July, 2022 to 29 December, 2022. He has also been Leader of the Opposition, since 29 December, 2022, and, previously, from 17 May, 2020 to 6 April, 2021, Leader of Yesh Atid, since 1 May, 2012, Minister of Finance, from 2013 to 2014, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, from 2021 to 2022.

Prime Minister Lapid is the son of Shulamit Lapid, a novelist and playwright, and Tommy Lapid (born Tomislav Lampel), a radio and television presenter, playwright, journalist, politician, and government minister.

His family is Ashkenazi Jewish, and most recently lived in areas that are now Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania/Transylvania. Prime Minister Lapid’s father was born in Novi Sad, Serbia, then Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and his mother was born in Tel Aviv. His paternal grandfather was killed by the Nazis in 1945. The family moved to Israel in 1948. Prime Minister Lapid grew up in Tel Aviv, and in London.

Prime Minister Lapid is married to author, photojournalist, and newspaper columnist Lihi Lapid. He has a son with his former wife Tamar Friedman, and two children with Lihi.

Prime Minister Lapid’s paternal grandfather was Bela Meir Lampel (the son of Joszef Lampel and Hermina Lederer). Bela was born in Čurug, South Backa District, Vojvodina, Serbia. Joszef was born in Bacsfoldvar, the son of Bela/Pavle Lampel and Ema Muller. Hermina was the daughter of Josef Lederer and Rosalia. She was arrested in Serbia during World War II, and was killed in a gas chamber in Auschwitz.

Prime Minister Lapid’s paternal grandmother was Katalin Bierman (the daughter of Adolf Bierman and Gizella Sattler). Katalin was born in Budapest, Hungary. Adolf was the son of Henrik Bierman and Katalin/Kata Wenger, who were from Nové Mesto Nad Váhom, Slovakia. Gizella was born in Novi Sad, South Backa, Vojvodina, Serbia, the daughter of Maria Karfunkelstein.

Prime Minister Lapid’s maternal grandfather was Yechiel David Klein/Gilaadi (the son of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Klein and Feiga Schwartz). David was born in Transylvania, and was a journalist, novelist, and translator, who co-founded the newspaper Maariv. Shlomo was born in Oradea, Municipiul Oradea, Județul Bihor, Romania, the son of Rabbi Moshe Martin Klein and Záli/Sarah/Sheindel/Shaindl Deutsch. Prime Minister Lapid’s great-grandmother Feiga was the daughter of Yekusiel Schwartz. She died in the Holocaust, in 1944.

Prime Minister Lapid’s maternal grandmother is named Helen Joseph (the daughter of Moses Joseph).
