Thorsten J. Pattberg, PhD, is a German cultural critic, philosopher of language, and linguist from Peking University.

Thorsten is the son of Juergen Heinz Pattberg and Rita Helga (Erhardt) Pattberg, from the city of Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia, formerly Prussia, today West Germany.

The Pattberg (Padberg, Padtberg, Badberch, or Pattberch) family traces their family line to 12th-14th century Westphalian aristocracy located between the valleys of Hoppecke and Diemel, where Padberg Castle on the steep hilltop of Padberg (also called “Alter Hagen”) is considered the ancestral home of many generations of Padberg.

Some branches of the Pattberg family tree emigrated to England (Manchester) and the United States (New Jersey) in the 19th century.
