Sammy Baugh was an American professional football player and coach. A quarterback, he played his entire National Football League (NFL) career with the Washington Redskins.

Sammy was the son of Lucinda and James Baugh, a worker on the Santa Fe Railroad. He was married to Edmonia Smith, until her death, with whom he had five children.

Sammy’s paternal grandfather was John Pascal Baugh (the son of William Lovic Baugh and Lucille Harris “Lucy” Purcell). John was born in Texas. William was born in Georgia, the son of William Martin Baugh and Elizabeth Lindsey. Lucille was the daughter of John Russell Purcell and Stacy Smart.

Sammy’s paternal grandmother was Geneva Ann Medlin (the daughter of Mathew Hawkins Medlin and Celeta Sofia Wright). Mathew was born in Texas, the son of Mathew Medlin and Elizabeth Bell.
